The US State Department has issued its annual report on human rights. The document gives a grim assessment of the human rights record in a number of states around the globe, including Russia.

The report cites Russian rights abuses in the North Caucasus where security forces were responsible for killing or maltreating political opponents. It also criticized Moscow's pressure on the news media and the hitherto unexplained deaths of several journalists.
