Russian President Dmitry Medvedev spoke to members of his party United Russia and told them that they would have to be prepared to see challenges to its dominant political rule.

Medvedev said: "United Russia is a leading political party now. This situation won't last forever. Other parties, if they succeed in the polls, will have similar rights [to propose candidates]. This will help develop political competition."
