Tamara Morschakova on the Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s Proposed Judicial System Reforms
Tamara Morschakova, a former Deputy Chairman of the Russian Constitutional Court, said that Mikhail Khodorkovsky's suggested reforms to Russia's judicial system are "undoubtedly possible to implement".
Morschakova expressed her support for all suggestions outlined by the businessman, especially regarding the widening the competence of jury trials. Morschakova said:
"The suggestions that Mikhail Khodorkovsky made are not unexpected, on contrary, these are in the flow with the public realizing the need for a reform in the judicial system. The urgency of the judicial reform should be widely discussed at various platforms for it to be finally accepted by the legal experts, lawmakers, the representatives of other branches of power as well as the society." She highlighted the importance of setting the priorities for judicial reform. She added that: "The reform started after the Constitution was adopted, which shows that neither the mentality of the Russian people nor the Russian lifestyle can be an obstacle to fair justice. Society should support the independence of judges."
