Much of Germany's upcoming elections have focused on the country's "strategic energy partnership" with Russia, notes the BBC's international affairs writer William Horsley.
Many in Europe accuse Germany of putting its own interests first, at the expense of Eastern Europe - but several controversial projects have linked the two countries considerably in recent years and months.
