Renowned Russian Rights Leader in Serious Condition After Attack

Russian human rights activist Lev Ponomarev is listed as being in serious condition after an attack outside his Moscow home following a meeting with Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, a representative from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, a human rights specialist and former rapporteur on the YUKOS case, is in Moscow researching for a report on political repression in Russia. conduct research for a report on political repressions in Russia.

A police spokesman said: "According to preliminary findings, the human rights activist was attacked by two unknown persons. We have not yet been able to identify the attackers."
