Mikhail Khodorkovsky released the following statement after the death in prison of Hermitage lawyer Sergey Magnitsky:

"I express my deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of Hermitage lawyer, Sergey Magnitsky, who died in prison.

A situation where a person's freedom, health and life is exploited by an investigator, a prosecutor and a judge is unacceptable.

It is even more unacceptable for the employees of the Federal Service for Punishment Implementation to support the kind of behaviour displayed by the investigator.

People have a right to expect that the management of federal bodies will react quickly, honestly and visibly to suppress this kind of practice.

We cannot underestimate the scale of the damage caused by such actions for Russia's reputation, the country's business climate, and economic competitiveness.
