Khodorkovsky: My Case is a Symbol of what is Happening in Russia
In an interview with La Repubblica, Mikhail Khodorkovsky talks about the trial and the future of Russia.
Khodorkovsky said that the hardest thing being far away from his family. He said: My wife and parents have been waiting for me for the last seven years. Nevertheless, their support gives me the courage to defend my reputation and my principles."
Khodorkovsky said that his line of defense takes into account our deep distrust in the court, describing his trail as "farcical." Commenting on Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's seemingly personal vendetta against him, Khodorkovsky said: "This case cannot be a purely personal matter, when the entire legal community and almost half of the most educated, active population have been observing it for 7 years. This case shows the context in which Russian business operates and it creates a well-known precedent of legal nihilism. Will the Russian establishment observe the law? I do not know. I hope so."
Discussing the current ruling tandem, Khodorkovsky said: "I believe that the differences between [President Dmitry] Medvedev and Putin are purely stylistic." However, he added: "Medvedev does not just speak. Changes are noticeable even from behind the bars. Society is slowly reviving."
Speaking about the media attention his trial has attracted, Khodorkovsky said: I am grateful to the media and the public for their attention and support. My case is not important as such, but it is a symbol of what is happening in Russia. So, whilst the hope for positive change is alive, attention is guaranteed. I would be very sad should all hopes be extinguished."
