Mikhail Khodorkovsky has assessed his chance of being released from jail stating he "hopes against hope" to be freed but believes that day would come only with an eventual change of regime in Russia. He added: "If it's done according to the law, it should be soon. But it will be when they stop being afraid, that is, never."

However, Khodorkovsky also told one student that political change would come to Moscow within the young man's lifetime, he said: "Russia will always exist and a change of power is inevitable." He told readers: "I am far from being a hero....Today, I am just a prisoner. Nothing more, nothing less...In Russia, national heroes as a rule are martyrs. I still want to live. However, sometimes when I am sick of it all, I think: why not be a hero?"
