Journalist Dmitry Kamyshev commented that new charges against Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev appear to "honor the masterminds behind the campaign against YUKOS."

In an opinion editorial in Kommersant Vlast, Kamyshev comments that the YUKOS Affair, as important and indicative as it is for the Western community, was reanimated at the close of Medvedev's first year in office when two seemingly incongruous events took place nearly simultaneously - Svetlana Bakhmina was released from jail while Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev found themselves facing new charges. However, there was nothing really incongruous about it.

Bakhmina's trial and imprisonment had already played their part in the campaign against YUKOS and Bakhmina lost whatever interest the security structure might have ever had in her.
