Pavel Khodorkovsky, who lives and works in New York, commented on the his father's situation on his 46th birthday:

Pavel Khodorkovsky said: "I hope that eventually the court will be strong enough to be independent and will make a fair ruling in the case, disregarding the political component of it. I am optimistic about it, I took this quality after my father. I hope positive changes will take place in Russia. I am proud of my father for being an honest person strong enough to confront lawlessness."
