Human Rights Activist Sergey Kovalev: The Second Trial Makes No Sense to Me
Sergey Kovalev at the Foundation for Prisoners' Rights believes that with the YUKOS trial the authorities are trying to teach Russian businessmen and the general public two lessons: to completely cut off any political ambitions and completely destroy independent court justice. Kovalev said: "The public has been shown that no one can look to win in a dispute with the government."
He added: "The second trial makes no sense to me. It looks like the government is haunted by the idea not to release [the accused businessmen]. This is their only motivation...There is a chance for a positive outcome in this case, though. If it happens, it will be a notorious victory for the social, economical, political and court systems of the country."
