Yulia Latynina comments that from the time Putin gained control of Gazprom, the Kremlin has been positioning Russia as an energy superpower.
However, she notes that the US produced just as much gas as Russia in 2008, and made almost $140 billion more in natural gas extraction - a gap which has only widened since the increased use of shale gas in the US.
