In an opinion editorial in Canada's National Post, Pat Akey, a PhD student in Finance at the London Business School, and Art Durnev, an assistant professor of Finance at McGill University's Desautels Faculty of Management, comment that Canadian investors should be wary about the political volatility of markets like Russia.

They note that one illustration of this volatility is the "infamous YUKOS affair" where Mikhail Khodorkovsky was "prosecuted and imprisoned, officially for tax evasion but more likely, many feel, for his political ambitions."
