Anton Oleinik, a senior researcher at the Institute of the Economy at the Russian Academy of Science and professor of the Memorial University in Canada, believes that the way the events in Russia in the1990s are interpreted, affect current political and economic situation in the country.

Oleinik suggests the development of a common approach to businessmen who accumulated their capitals and power during the 1990s. He argues that if the authorities choose to treat such actions as crimes, then everyone, not only YUKOS, should be punished.
