Hervé Mariton, a member of the National Assembly of France, attended the trial. On April 9, 2009, Mariton explains why he finds the legal system in Russia and the trial of Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev in particular at once "ordinary and extraordinary."

While the court, the policement, the lawyers are ordinary, he notes that "everything that is happening to Khodorkovsky and Lebedev is not normal, not lawful, not our idea of human rights."
